Yesterday, I was shaking my head at the idea of Scentbird starting a subscription box as it were a new thing. But now with my critical thinking ahead of my cynicism, I can see it now. It is a new thing… for them. Sometimes, that is all it takes to innovate.
I, and maybe you as well, can get caught in up in the idea of finding what has never been done before. If we are going to innovate, it has to have never existed in this universe ever. But let’s be real. That’s not true.
To innovate means allowing yourself to think differently. It doesn’t mean chasing newness simply for newness’s sake. For Scentbird, that built itself on the idea of customers choosing exactly what they want, the surprise model is new. It’s forcing them try a new delivery model and appeal to a new set of consumers. They are willingly trying something they have never done before. And that might be enough.
If you have been racking your brain, searching for innovative ideas, maybe it’s time to narrow the search. Maybe it’s time to look around at what already exists and see how you can make it new for yourself.
