To dress well

When I was much younger, I would sit at my family’s desktop and play. I would head to Barbie.com where they had a interactive games. For probably hours, I would name the dolls, design their looks, and of course decide what they would wear. When I got older, I graduated to a Land’s End site where you could fit 3-D models before moving on to copying and pasting clothing images to very crudely put together outfits in a Word document. I always playing with clothes and putting together outfits. It was a fun game, but only when I was on the outside never the dress-up doll myself.

I’m starting to rethink things, reconsidering my relationship to fashion and how I engage in it. Ultimately, I’m actively thinking about how I choose to dress myself each day. I have these words from the late great André Leon Talley reflect on:

We have a moral code to dress well, to present your best, put your best. We used to say at home to put your best foot forward. So, when you are going out to meet the world, you are supposed to present according to your expense account or your budget, what you can afford in your budget. You must do the best you possibly can.

André Leon Talley

What is the best I can do? How will I uphold that moral code?

You can watch the full interview with Talley here (not saying it is the best interview, but it will let you hear the quote in context):
