I don’t know what to write about today. I am trying to understand my skin, through the lens of my health. Last week I wrote about how I will finally start drinking the recommended servings of water. This week, I suppose it’s fitting to say that I will also start exercising consistently.
The importance of exercise has been drilled into me for years because of weight management, strength , and cardiac health. But what about your skin?
A study following Japanese women over 16 weeks found that aerobic exercise and resistance training can improve skin over time. I won’t dive deep into the how (largely because I don’t understand it), but the gist is that exercise improves skin thickness and elasticity and reduces inflammation. All that action targets key drivers of skin aging (Nishikori et al 2023). And other studies found that exercise can lead to faster healing, decreased experiences of psoriasis, and decreased stress and its related skin conditions (Yeh et al, 2021).
As I go on this journey, I am curious about how my skin will change. Will I notice the effects myself? Will my skin start to improve as I make exercise a regular part of my routine? I don’t know, but I want to find out.
Again, internet, I’ve told you about it. So, now I’ve got to do it.
