There was a time in my life where I went about collecting quotes almost literally. In tiny handwriting, I covered a sheet of cardstock with as many as called to me. But there was one that I wrote out with a thick-tipped marker, filling the page: Fortune favors the brave. It was something that I undoubtedly needed to see everyday as I tried to gain confidence. But now, perhaps it is something that brands need to adopt and post as well.
How many sequels and remakes will we get? At what point will film studios run away using familiarity as a ploy to sell more tickets and focus on pushing out better, enticing stories? When will makeup brands stop the endless push towards new products we never asked far, all because they convinced themselves that newness will win the market? And will more brands allow themselves to be vocal about their values, even if controversy may ensue?
What if brands were bold?
For some that might mean spending more money on research and innovation to find better ways to meet customer needs. It might mean shifting your logo to fit the changing times, after years of consistency. Or maybe for some, it means being willing to keep things exactly the same, even while everyone around is panic switching.
To be clear, I don’t believe that boldness is always about standing out. It is about being willing to act in the face of uncertainty. It is about being willing to forge ahead in what might be uncharted territories for you.
To those of you leading brands or just starting, embrace courage as a part of your strategy. Let your boldness lead to your fortune.
