Before I tried Sakara, I was scraping the internet for information on what to expect. People talked about the food, but I wanted to know the logistics. (Don’t worry I’ll give more details on the experience in a later post.) Now that I’ve tried the Level II Detox, I will happily let you know what you should expect, if you are also a planner.
As a quick overview so that you know what I’m talking about: The Level II Detox is a 5 day whole food approach to resetting your gut and entire body. It’s not a juice cleanse. It is based on whole foods and supplements. Think more salads and soups. Here is the answer to some questions you might have and what you can expect:
When will I get the deliveries?
You delivery will come on two days, Sunday and Wednesday. You will probably get multiple updates on when you should expect your boxes. I got emails letting me know to expect the package. Then, a text message letting me know the expected time window and a photo of the delivered package after it was dropped off.
Both days will come in a large box. That is largely because they have a liner and gel packs to keep your food cold. In your Sunday delivery, you will receive all of your tonics and supplements as well as your meals from Monday to Wednesday. On Wednesday, you will receive your meals for Thursday and Friday.
Can you schedule your delivery?
No, you cannot. You just have to hope for the best. If you are not able to be home to receive the packages, your food should still be cold when you’re able to get to them. But if you are worried about package thieves, then you might just want to do this on a week where you’re free to be home on Sunday and Wednesday.
How much space will it take up in the fridge?
In what I think is my standard-sized American refrigerator, the delivery took up just one shelf. So if you are sharing the space with others, keep that in mind.
What is the food like?
There is a standard menu that they use for the detox program. It is largely a combo of salads and soups. There are a few things that can be heated. There is a chance that they will update the program and change the meals, depending on when you’re reading this post. (You can read about the meals provided and learn what the ingredients are here.)
The detox is different from their signature program, in that they omit even more ingredients. You will notice that this program omits all grains and nightshades, whereas the signature program includes them. They do this to address possible sources of inflammation.
Does the food taste good?
That depends on what you’re thinking good food tastes like. I personally was surprised to enjoy the meals. When I hear detox, I think suffering. I was surprised to enjoy the meals as much as I did for what they were. There were somethings I didn’t love, but there also were some things I am considering including in my diet moving forward. If you don’t like vegetables, then I’m not sure why you’re even considering this program.
Will I be hungry?
Yes, very likely yes. This is a fasting protocol based on whole foods. You are intentionally eating fewer calories while being focused on increased nutrition. But this is for just 5 days. Consider your lifestyle needs and if you can handle being in a significant caloric deficit at this time.
Should I do this program?
If you have the budget, have no allergies to the foods included, and can take a week to slow down and just focus on you, I would say give it a try. But of course, if you have any health conditions, you should make that decision with your doctor.
