I think I miss commercials

You know what? I think I miss commercials. I know. For years Americans worked to avoid commercials. First it was with DVRs to fast forward through recorded commercial breaks. Then it was streaming platforms that skipped adding them all together. But now, we come to moments like this, the World Cup. With major sporting events come some of the most inventive and entertaining ads. The brands are putting out their best and most creative work now that the entire world is watching. And to be honest, I would have never seen any of these spots if the algorithm had its way.

With each half-time and now hydration break, I look forward to the commercials. Which footballing legend will pop up next? What crazy story line will they throw in? They’re entertaining, but are they effective? You might all that money into the commercials. You might get more awareness, but you may not get an equal increase in sales.

Personally, even though I may enjoy and even share the commercials I’m watching, I can’t say that I’m driven to buy any Michelob, shop at Home Depot, drink Coca-Cola, or order a Lenovo as a result of these ads. I will say, however, that I do very much want to get back into wearing Adidas.
