Picture this. An REI tote, resting gently in the portable toilets at an outdoor festival. What was once a promotional product is essentially now branded litter. Eek, not exactly the image you want to go with your outdoor focused brand.
When you think about getting your name out there, promotional giveaways sits at the top of the “things I need to make sure I have” pyramid. Whether you’re tabling at an event or just considering what to pass out to random students on a Tuesday, it’s there in the back of your mind. Order something. Slap your logo on it. Give it away. Mine the gold that will surely come of the enhanced brand awareness. And then you end up with this. Your name in a urinal, and not in the cool guerilla marketing type of way.
You don’t just want to build awareness. You want to build desire.
Everyone who walked into that portable toilet saw REI Co-Op. There is no doubt about that. I do doubt that anyone left clamoring to head to their website or stores after they washed their hands.
Before you print yet another tote bag or t-shirt or even a box of pens, ask yourself this question: Am I just putting my name out there or am I leaving people wanting more?
