My trip this past weekend to New York City was the ultimate in winter travel to the area. After years of being spoiled by mild temperatures, I finally got a taste of what the season can really be like in the Big Apple. A huge snowstorm came through the area, and I found myself in it. Luckily I came prepared and will happily pass these tips on to you.

- Check the weather forecast
You already do this, right? If you don’t, make sure you are checking the forecast to help inform you on what to pack. Do you need just a light coat or do you need to bring a parka? You’ll only know that if you check the extended forecast to see what to expect. My forecast predicted a major snowstorm and extremely cold temperatures. I knew that I would need to pack for warmth and not convenience or style. Hat, mittens, coat, and scarf were promptly added to my luggage.
- Use compression packing bags
When you do pack your down-filled coat and sweaters, save some room in your luggage by compressing them down. I chose to pack my warmest coat using a zip-top packing bag that allowed me to push all of the air out. That helped me fit it into my carry-on without a problem.
- Be prepared to shift your plans
My original flight was scheduled to come in during a major snowstorm. I chose to push it forward a day to avoid experiencing travel delays. In addition to changing your travel plans, you might need to be mindful of how the weather will impact your stay. Will heavy snow lead to closures? The city that never sleeps will be back and running as soon as possible, but you might experience some delayed starts or cancellations. Check the website and social media of the places you plan to visit to make sure they’re open. But also as a positive, bad weather could also mean fewer crowds and a restaurant all to yourself.
- Wear waterproof shoes with good tread
Listen, I know it is the style capital of the world. You have been waiting to debut your new heels. Unless you are planning to carry them in your hand, please do yourself and everyone else on the sidewalk a favor, don’t do it. After the snowstorm, the sidewalks will not be perfectly cleared. There will be slippery salt. And there will definitely be puddles at the intersections. Bring your best pair of shoes that can handle that. Or maybe you like the idea of having wet socks in sub-freezing temperatures and testing your balance everywhere you go.
- Embrace it
Winter in New York is the least desirable time to go. It’s cold and miserable, but that makes it the best time. Room rates are cheaper and the lines are shorter. If you’re a budget traveler it’s the perfect time a wintry vacation.
