Is this day for Veterans or Singles?

If you are looking at your promotional emails today on 11/11 there are two options. First, you could be seeing tributes to veterans. Perhaps you see a free coffee for active and retired military and their family members. Or there’s just a blanket Veterans’ Day sale promo. Option number two is a message telling you to treat yourself or embrace your individuality. In this case you are seeing promotions for Singles’ Day.

If you are not aware, Veterans Day is celebrated in the U.S. and other western nations. Singles’ Day started in China. You can kind of see targeting strategy at work with these two promotion directions. There is some indication of the audiences that the brands are appealing to. Veterans’ Day continues to be a major day for sales and discounts in the U.S. because many people will have work off and be available to shop. On the other hand, those brands that have or trying to gain a foothold in the Chinese market, will likely opt for Singles’ Day. This especially true for luxury brands who then share that promotional opportunity globally. And in some cases, it seems this is a good opportunity to tap into a sale period without associations to the military, for brands that promote peace.
