When I booked the Moxy, I was excited. I had been toying with booking a different hotel, but I was intrigued by the quirky vibe. Plus the conference I was attending offered a discount.

Upon checking in, I was provided a drink coupon for the hotel bar. Heading up to the 3rd floor, I saw the lounge, and the Bear wearing a t-shirt. I also saw a glimpse of the basketball gym.

When I got to my room, I was disappointed. It was just a bed. A very firm bed might I add. I have to admit, I am not used to the space restrictions of NYC properties, so this threw me for a loop. Is this literally all you really need in a hotel room? Yes, but I have come to expect more. Any additional furniture was folded and mounted on the wall.

Two folding stools and luggage rack hung ready to be assembled.

A table with the words “pull me” guided you to fit it to standing, like a murphy bed.
(Also that water bottle was there when I checked in. I have no idea if it was left by another guest or was part of the hospitality. I didn’t drink it.)

After looking aimless for a cord to control the blinds, I discovered it was controlled by a button next to the bed. I kinda wish I had been given a heads up on that. (I am thinking back to my time at 1 Hotel and the service with those kinds of details.)

The bathroom was decent. Nothing out of the ordinary, other than a sliding window covered by a picture. So I guess anyone staying with you could take a peak if they liked? Bath products were provided by Muk in large size multiuse containers, to reduce the plastic waste of the tiny single use toiletries hotels give out. The bath and a body and hair wash, which felt like I was using shampoo on my skin. And even though conditioner was provided, there was no lotion to help with the dryness.
If I seem overly critical or bitter, I must admit I left feeling more tired after not sleeping well. My street facing room allowed me to hear all of the sirens and horns all night. And when those stopped, I was able to hear my neighbors’ conversations and the slams of everyone’s extremely heavy doors.
I admit that I didn’t have the best experience but I would recommend this place if you:
- Want proximity to key NY landmarks, convention spaces, transit
- Need a place easy to get to using transit from LGA
- Crave nightlife just steps away from your room
- Don’t mind scalded back accommodations
- Are willing to pay for location
- Want a bit of a quirky vibe
- Feel nosy and want to hear all your neighbors’ business (because let me tell you that room had some drama)
I don’t recommend this place if you:
- Are a light sleeper
- Are particular about toiletries
- Need more in your room (like a coffee maker or iron)
Would I stay there again? Honestly, I am a very light sleeper. I personally would try another hotel with better sound proofing. When I’m on vacation, I want to get more sleep, not less. But that is just me. What are your thoughts?
