“Can any one suggest a horror film?” It was a simple ask on the company’s messenger service. And it was definitely a request befitting Halloween. I just had no suggestions. I am not a horror film person. The world is scary enough. I was too much on edge to even get through Troll Hunters, a kids show. I just wanted Jim to make it out okay. But if we talk about real fear, I’m thinking about 1984 and Fahrenheit 451.
The scariest stories are those that seem real.
Every time I see the screens at the gas pump I think about the constant surveillance in the future presented by Orwell in 1984. The push for driverless cars and constant cries for book bans remind me of the society built by Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451. On the surface, these worlds seem like progress. But for the protagonist growing increasingly aware, it’s a bleak prison.
The push for technological advancement and innovation may very well be a good thing. But it can also very swiftly send us into a darker future than maybe we can see. I don’t know what the final answer is. I have nothing to say to avoid ensure we avoid going down that path. And that is the scariest part of all.

What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?
