Let the door close

I went up for a job that I was a shoe-in for. “I don’t see you successful in this role.” It was a shock to me, mostly because I knew it wasn’t true. But I took the no and moved on.

In other times I might have felt devastated by the blow. I might have gone on to doubt myself. Instead, I went on to doubt her and blind spots in the organizations talent identification processes.  I knew wholeheartedly and humbly that I would absolutely crush it in the role and support the organization into moving to higher levels of success. I had full confidence in my abilities and did not let someone’s no shake that.

Later I would see a short by Wemi Opakunle, “When someone threatens to close a door on you, let them.”

It was validation to continue to find the path that is truly for me, fighting for myself instead of against others who choose not to support me. I won’t be stopped by the closed door. It wasn’t the right room anyway.
