When Whitney Tingle and Danielle Dubose started Sakara, a huge motivation for doing so was a food-based approach to healing acne. In a cruel fit of irony, I have ended the Sakara summer program with some of the worst acne I have ever experienced. I am sitting here now with large bumps along my left jawline. While everyone else was getting more glowy skin, I’m left with this acne that refuses to go away. What gives?
I did some digging. It is not unusual for people to experience more acne upon doing a detox program, Sakara’s included. They go on to say that it is part of the pathway that your body takes to getting rid of toxins. Just make sure that you continue to support your body with nutrition and habits, and it will go away.
I have to admit. While on the 5 Day detox, I was getting the recommended 64 ounces of water plus the hydration tonic. And of course, I was getting a vitamin rich diet. However, after I finished the challenge, I fell off. Slowly, I let my old approaches to food to return. My body was still detoxing, so to speak, but I was longer fully supporting it in making those changes.
Now, I know that I have a lot work ahead of me to shift my habits. I guess I’m somewhat thankful that my skin issues might be what finally gets me to take control of how I eat. Here I am writing this in the morning, post chicken biscuits and coffee, but having drank a full 16 ounce glass of water and a mug of tea.
I wish it were quick fix to reset my body and my skin, but it was just the starting line. There are more choices to make for years to come. This is a skincare journey, not a sprint.
