The myth of 1 percent better

“That’s ridiculous. No one gets one percent better. If you were a salesperson and you did 1 percent better, you’d be making no money.” At that point, I cut the video. This is not the person I should take advice from. From an inability to do math alone, he’s a fool.

If I could do only 1 push-up today and improved 1 percent everyday, by the end of the year I would be able to do 37. Sure it would take me about 2.5 months to get to 2, but the effort would be compounded. And it wouldn’t be zero. If I continue 1 percent improvement every single day the following year, I would be able to do 1,384 pushups on December 31. It adds up.

Marginal improvement is still improvement. Allow yourself to accept incremental change. Continue to put in sustained effort overtime. A little bit today will multiply tomorrow. Don’t count yourself out of doing something big. Put the work in and see just how far you’ll go.
