A little change in perspective

At the meeting, there was a woman speaking to a group of other attendees, making easy eye contact with them. I get it that’s not special at all. What’s special is that she was in a wheelchair. As she spoke to the group, she lifted her seat to be at eye level with them. Getting home, I started to look more into things and found research was being done to provide wheelchair users with special cameras to accommodate for the angles they can’t see based on how they’re seated. I don’t think I ever thought before about how powerful that could be.

These are clearly design elements that came about with a clear focus on the experience of the end user. Someone, either building from their own personal experience or that of a community, came up with a solution to a problem. It wasn’t just a pretty design element or a “wow that’d be nice to have feature”; it met a need.

I think that is what we often forget when it comes to marketing.

Products should fill a need or provide value in some way. We shouldn’t just be coming up with good ideas; we should be coming up with solutions. What are the problems that you’ve noticed? What the issues out there in the world? Where can you be the answer that someone had been looking for?
