I was down on myself this week. I couldn’t get my brain to rev up and get to work. I had sat at my desk for three hours with nary an accomplishment except for an impressive watch time on my phone. In situations like this, it is very easy for me to slap on the label “You’re lazy,” sink into a pit of wallowing, and all the like. The tougher job is admitting that that is a cop-out. I have to dig deeper.
Maybe you, too, are looking at the lists of tasks you’ve not done and are ready to just call yourself lazy. Stop and assess. What is really keeping you from getting things done? Is it really that you have at your core a deep unchangeable personality flaw? Or is it just a barrier for right now, something that you can easily get around if you find the right solutions?
In my case, I had to recognize that I was unclear on my tasks for the day and felt overwhelmed. I need to find a solution that gave me greater clarity and didn’t lead me to ignore how I was feeling. But that is for me and specifically just for that instance. For future me and for you now, the solutions will look different.
So the next time you eager to call yourself lazy, take a moment to reassess to determine the real issue. Are you really lazy or do you just need a different solution?
