FTC issues new rules on fake reviews

You’ve seen them. You’re on the site trying to evaluate whether or not you should order that thing. You’re reading the reviews and there is one that seems … off. Dare I say fake, overly glowing, and like they never actually used the product. Now the FTC is doing something about that.

The Federal Trade Commission in the U.S. has banned not only fake reviews but a longer list of ways misrepresenting the truth, including

  • Buying social media followers or views
  • Failing to disclose employee reviews
  • Deleting negative reviews
  • Paying/compensating for reviews

Now, these new rules will mean that the FTC can take actions against companies that break these rules, but that won’t necessarily stop the behaviors in the first place. We’ll see soon whether their retaliatory actions will be enough to stop the rise of fake reviews.
