Scarcity is a tool

I have been personally victimized by the scarcity game. I have made purchases I would later regret or mentally wrestle my credit card down all in the name of getting in on the limited-time only sale, or being worried items would sell out. Driven by my own experiences, I have been digging into this tactic. After all scarcity is a marketing tactic. I will be spending time digging into the research, but let’s make this clear:

Marketers use scarcity as a tool, because it works.

Think about it. Try to remember all those commercials you might have watched growing up. “While supplies last,” “Only available for a limited time,” “Act now,” Even the infomercials with their countdown timers, prompting you to call before time ran out. All of it was scripted to get you think “gasp, scarcity, we need to buy it right now.”

As you interact with advertising, check out different websites, and walk through stores, pay attention. Can you see any examples of they might be using scarcity as a way to reel you in?
