Moving from to-do lists to focus items

Yesterday, I wrote on my dry erase board, “Take out the recycling.” At that moment, I was going to take out the recycling. That was it. No, don’t stop and pick up the sock on the floor. That wasn’t on the list. I went back inside and wrote the next thing, “Make the bed.” Don’t worry about folding that stuff, you’re just making the bed like that. And as I continued throughout that hour, I wrote a task on the board, completed that task, and then wrote the next task.

I decided to write down the one task I was going to focus on that moment. I didn’t get hung up on all the things that I needed to do that day. I only focused on what I was going to do then, in that singular moment. And that made the difference for me.
