What not to wear to fashion week

I just have to give you some blunt advice on what you should not wear to a fashion show. Yes, at the end of the day you have free will to do whatever you want. But doing whatever you want could lead to some consequences. I want to help you avoid that. Here are some things you should avoid as you pull together your outfits to watch the runway.

Your “sit-down” shoes

I know you want to show out for fashion week. I know you see images of people just sitting for the show. But really, there is not as much sitting as you think there will be. After all, the show is only 10 minutes or so. What you don’t see is the waiting in line for over an hour and the running through city streets to make it on time. If your shoes require to start begging people to carry you after an hour, you should rethink the choice.

An inflatable dress

This might seem like an odd piece of advice, but there is a trend of people buying and wearing these ridiculous inflatable dresses, because fashion. Here’s the thing. The actual seating is jampacked. At best, you risk frustrating everyone around you who has to squish next to you and hear the sounds of your latex squeaking. At worst, you’ll get escorted out for being a distraction. While I’m focusing on the glorified balloon, this advice extends to all large, extravagant garments. Please respect the personal space of others as you consider what to wear.

Anything you’d hate to see in a movie theater

Of course, the next thing is to remind you of is that you will be seated in rows. The vision of people behind you will already be blocked by your head. Don’t add insult to injury with an oversized hat befitting of a Dr. Seuss character. If you’d hold your breath hoping someone wearing that doesn’t sit in front of you, don’t cause the same fear to someone else.

Your “throw on” clothes

You know what outfit I mean. It’s the one you wear when you have to rush out to the store and just have to be decent enough under the law. But you really hope you don’t run into anyone you know while you’re out. You can wear whatever you want to a fashion show, but be mindful that you never know who you’ll meet. And you will be in pictures. Show up photo ready because you will be seen by everyone and their cameras.

If you noticed, most of my advice on what not to wear has to do with your comfort and that of those around you. That is the biggest takeaway that I have. You really can wear anything to fashion week. But whatever you wear, don’t let your outfit get in the way of showing up as your most confident and comfortable self.
