“What do you even wear to a fashion show?” That was the question I repeatedly asked of the internet. And the internet gave me nothing, except pictures of people and advice to be bold. Quite frankly, it wasn’t helpful. I was just as confused as before. But now on the other side having attended a show and observed everyone around me, I can tell you exactly what you need to know as you get your own outfit together. What you “should” wear depends on your goal. There is no one way to dress.
Goal 1: Make it on to “what people are wearing” photo edit
This is where the advice to “Be bold” applies. If you’re trying to catch the eye of the street photographers, you need to stand out. Pull out your most daring color and pattern combos. Try out some interesting textures. Wear a statement hat. Get yourself noticed.
Goal 2: Look good for picture day
Truthfully, you will end up in someone’s pictures and videos anyway, unless you’re going to a The Row show. Think about what image of you that you want immortalized across social media. Maybe you spend more time on your hair and makeup than you normally would, rather than just planning your outfit. Try to look like yourself, just a little bit more elevated.
Goal 3: Pay homage to the brand
You could always take your inspiration from the designer you’re going to see. Study the brand. Get to know the vibe. Is it know for a preppy chic, edgy cool, streetwear, or ultra-feminine aesthetic? Do they tend to lean towards bright, playful colors or muted grays? Pull together an outfit that seems to fit the ethos of what they typically present. That doesn’t mean you have to buy and wear pieces from their previous collection. Go into your own closet and see what you have that could fit the look.
Goal 4: Get through the work day
While this is just a fun experience for people like me, other people are there to work. Journalists and photographers are also there and running from show to show. They’ve got their own aesthetic that they maintain and don’t even try to mold their fashion to the shows. They’re running from show to show. They may want to look slightly fashionable, but they need comfortable shoes and layers to balance temperature fluctuations. If you’re a pro, you bring your own fan to stay cool.
Goal 5: Go shopping
At the end of the day, attending a fashion show is basically just going window shopping in the most elaborate way possible. You’re just trying to see what clothes you might want to buy 6 months from now. Dress however you would for when you go out to shop in-person.
Truly, you can wear whatever you want. There was so much variety in how people showed up, that I don’t think it really matters what you wear, so long as you were wearing clothes. Be comfortable or daring, just be you.

As I looked around, I noticed so much variability in how everyone was dressed. There were clear archetypes, but no distinct message of what you had to wear. It was all in how you wanted to show up.
But if all else fails, just wear all black and sunglasses.
