If you are gearing up for a trip to Boston, you are no doubt creating a packing list. I am going to create one for you, perhaps of some things you might not have put on your list otherwise. So, you’re welcome.
Cash
Surprisingly, in this day and age, I am going to advise that you bring some cash. Smaller establishments, like Modern were cash only or had a faster line for cash payments. So that you don’t miss out on experiencing the hype, be flexible and expand beyond just card payments
Comfortable walking shoes
The city is very walkable. You can explore a lot more easily if your feet don’t hurt. Be sure pack shoes that are up to going for miles everyday. Bonus point if they help you stay steady on some of the cobblestone streets.
Umbrella/rain jacket
This is seasonally dependent, but I was caught in a late summer torrential downpour. I want you to be more prepared than I was.
Empathy
Homelessness is an unfortunate reality of this major city. You will likely encounter many people who are experiencing it. Balance your sense of safety with care for people. They are not just obstacles in your way.
Appetite
There are so many restaurants to explore. From small outposts to Michelin starred powerhouses, you can eat to your hearts content in Boston.
Vigilance
Seagulls are city animals and do not fear humans. Don’t fall victim. Protect yourself and your snacks when you head to the waterfront.
Focus on details
Many restaurants and coffee shops in the Financial District and other office space heavy areas cater to workers. Establishments are often closed Saturday and Sunday and/or just after the end of each business day. Be sure to look up the operational hours before you set your heart on visiting.
Open-mindedness
Yes, Dunkin’ is omnipresent, but it’s not the only option. Try a new, locally owned coffee or donut shop while you’re in town. Or allow yourself to indulge without guilt. Up to you.
