It was my day to experience Boston on my own terms, without overscheduling myself. It was time for me to finally experience one of the cities landmarks. The Fanueil Hall Marketplace is the oldest continuously running marketplace in the U.S. It dates back to before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And today, it is still a bustling square. And there’s a freestanding Sephora. It was time I went.

I left from the Langham Hotel and headed up to Fanueil Hall, which was just a short walk away. There I discovered a historic site, with informative exhibits. While it was a key location for the Liberty Trail, it also holds stories about the Freedom Trail. Intertwined with the story of U.S. independence, I saw the detailing the stories of freed and enslaved people who are also key to Boston’s history. I also noticed that there was the option to go on walking tours with guides, telling all about the history of the city. Had I planned better, I might have joined one.

From there I headed outside and noticed a performer with an elaborate setup in front of Quincy Market. Kimberly, of Kimberly’s Pocket Circus, was doing acrobatic skills and handstands, with tent that had dancing chickens. Then I realized that, despite my initial thought, she was just one of many performers throughout the area, showcasing their talents and requesting tips from the audience. And now, I’ve learned, these are just random people showing up. This is a fully supported venture, where you can apply to the marketplace to perform, with evidence that you have what it takes to entertain effectively.

I walked down some around the marketplace of the outdoor shops and noticed Captain Candy and had to go in. There were literal kids in the candy shop, but I may have been more excited. I filled a bag and walked down to the waterfront to enjoy my treat and take in the scenery.

It was then on to the Boston Public Market, just a few steps away, a relatively much newer haven for Boston small businesses. If you are not on an extremely lazy vacation, you can make it there for an 11 AM tour on Fridays to learn more about the story of the location. Otherwise, you can do like I did and pass through the produce stands outside and then head in and wander about all the stalls. I contemplated getting some donuts or beautifully fruit-shaped desserts, but I opted instead for a lavender latte at the George Howell coffee stand and then choosing some spice blends from Curio Spice.

You could reasonably spend an entire day at the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, shopping, eating, and being entertained. If you have not been, and even if you have, make sure you add it to your next Boston trip itinerary.
