After John Galliano and the host committee decided to remove the controversial designer from the Met Gala theme, there’s now a gap. What will the 2027 theme be? Over there years , the theme carried weight. We watched the parade of celebrities and judge their outfits on interpretation of the theme. It’s used to guide the development of the accompanying exhibit at the museum. Since I’ve know about the gala, I have know theme to be a central part. But maybe it’s not.

Truthfully, and this is lost on us regular people who aren’t in these circles, it’s just a fundraising dinner. The aim of raising money for The Met came first. The themes came later in the history of the event. You can have a gala where everyone just dresses however they want and, perhaps, without the long carpet and fanfare and still raise money.

But because The Met Gala has become synonymous with pop culture, they’ll probably come up with a theme soon. Happy to learn about it when they do.
