A Wren Says

I’m drawn to fragrance names. Just by what I read alone, I’ll give myself a little spray before doing my research. With a name like Cricket Song, I had no idea what to expect from this Floraiku fragrance.

If I had stopped to think, I would have probably thought of something vegetal, or perhaps the nighttime air, calling to mind a cricket perched and singing in the trees. But after trying to search for the link to the product page, perhaps I should have thought of shouting fans watching a cricket match.

Floraiku mentions the Ella Fitzgerald song of the same name. I think it smells a bit like that.

The vibe is not at all the quiet stillness I might think of sitting on the porch in the moonlight. The song was improvised at the end of her set, where the crickets were serenading her just as much as the entertained the crowd. The song is jolly, fun, and danceable. On my skin this fragrance is bright and with a bit of powder. The magnolia and orange blossoms rise up as the most prominent notes. It is unmistakably a floral fragrance.

I can imagine a world in which I’d be wearing this, on a crisp early spring evening. I’d be sitting myself at a jazz show, with my hair in a French roll and dressed in an unapologetically feminine and yet mature way. And yet, I don’t personally gravitate towards floral fragrances on me. We’ll see if that future comes to be.
