I watched the original Devil Wears Prada an obscene amount of times. There was an era in my life where I needed that tale. I could see myself in Andy’s journey. So of course, I was eager to watch the sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, on the opening weekend. I intentionally avoided watching any trailers or checking out any content so I could go in blind and let the story unfold without bias. But I was also a little nervous. Sequels are far too often disappointing. What if it was horrible? Well, I watched it, I enjoyed it, and without any spoilers ( or real substance) here’s why I think you should, too.
- The clothes. Full stop
- If you just love fashion, there were so many looks in that movie that I straight up envied. Watch attentively for outfits that catch your eye. I thoroughly look forward to when this hits streaming so I can reverse image search everything they wore.
- A love letter to world of fashion
- There were little jokes that made me chuckle because of what I’ve learned about the industry. If felt like they made a movie for fashion people. I recognized so many designers and models. And yes again the clothes. It reminded me that fashion could be fun and a part of daily life, even while you’re doing the most mundane work tasks.
- The continuation of the story
- It showed the characters’ development over the 20 years. They didn’t just become brand new people. They demonstrated how they grew and matured over time. It felt cohesive with where we left off in the first film.
- Homages to the first movie
- I am a big fan of the first movie. I appreciated how they found their way to subtly tip their hat to the original for those who are in the know without going overboard.
If you were a fan of the first movie, I believe you’ll like this one. And even if you have never watched it, I think you’ll like it, too. It’s a fun sequel that did true justice to the franchise. I don’t think we need a third one, but this was great, and I would definitely watch it again.
If you can, try and catch The Devil Wears Prada 2 in theatres. And let me know if you’re able to get one of those famed purse shaped popcorn buckets.
