Unnecessary superpowers

There is a scene in the Bourne Identity where Jason Bourne points out all of the different elements he notices in the diner, including the location of all exits and the possible threats. I have a similar ability. I notice and anticipate others’ needs. Walking in to a coffee shop, I can point out all of the seats next to outlets. If I walk in with just a book, I know to avoid those chairs just in case someone needs to charge their computer. My power is to be able to anticipate all of the possible needs in a situation. While it may be considerate, that superpower of mine can also easily become my own Kryptonite.

Trying so hard to notice what others might need or be thinking often means ignoring what I need and think. Trying so hard to be considerate has meant being inconsiderate of myself. I know that this shouldn’t be an either or situation. I know that you shouldn’t have to destroy yourself to build up others. And yet, I keep ending up in this situation. I am working to be better. I am working on pausing and assessing each situation in a different light, thinking about what I need in the moment, what others need, and where we can meet in the middle.
