Is this even about marketing?

There was a raid on a Hyundai plant in small town in the state of Georgia. It was another in a long list of headlines about how the Trump administration was acting on immigration in the U.S. For some time, news covered stories of raids happening across the United States. Fears mounted about who might be next and what fate awaited those who were taken in. And before that the president and his spokespeople frequently used rhetoric about “rounding them up.” This would be alarming information for individual citizens, no doubt. But what if you’re a business?

I write a lot about the importance of including analysis of changes to the legal and political environment. We have to keep these things in mind as we think about how we go about marketing. But that feels icky to say. It feels divorced from the real human element of it. There isn’t an just increased cost to doing business. There are people here in this, feeling this, experiencing this.

I don’t have a good answer in terms of a marketing perspective right now. But, at its core, marketing is about identifying and providing for needs. Yes, we should be aware of what is going on and adapting. But most of all make sure you’re checking on and providing the people in your care with what they need.
