I had a moment. I realized that I am most successful when I stick strictly to a routine, to a degree that worries others. I excel there. I feel great there. However, my biggest flaw is that I believe that I shouldn’t have to do that. Other people are able to just decide what they want to work on that day, what they will cook for dinner that night, and their outfit right before running out the door. I can definitely do all those things, too, as I have been trying to do. But I suffer for it. Running my life with that degree of flexibility and lack of structure does not let me thrive. My ability and desire to stick to a plan is a strength and a weakness.
I know that about myself, but I have not intentionally designed my life with that in mind. I have not been taking a good look at my strengths and weaknesses and letting those inform my strategy to reach my goals. But I certainly should.
Instead of just coming up with goals and fighting to reach to them, I need to take a good look at how I already show up. What are the things that I already do that will support or derail my success? And then, what are the things in my environment (family, neighborhood, home, the world at large) that I can tap into to get me closer to my goal? And what should I be mindful to steer clear off?
In the business world (and hear on this blog), you will hear the importance of conducting a SWOT analysis of your organization as you develop your market strategy. Maybe it’s time we do something similar for ourselves as we try to reach our goals.
S-Strengths, W-Weaknesses, O-Opportunities, T-Threats: What are each of those for you? How can discovering them help you redefine and reach your goals faster?
