Just rambling thoughts about sponsored research

As I was looking into what, if anything, you should be sure to clean while traveling, I can across a press release. They said that research indicated how germs spread through hotels. Then I noticed this was from Lysol. Perhaps, it is reputable and holding to the highest of ethical guidelines. But that’s not what I paid attention. In my mind, I could shake the sense that perhaps this old study was rigged to favor their brand.

I am not going to dive deeper into this right now, but there is something think about when it comes to the world of sponsored research. On the research side, there is a whole host of ethical declarations scientists have to make to their community when their research is sponsor. They have to come clean to their peers and reveal any possible biases. What about the brand footing the bill?

How can we hold major corporations and wealthy donors to a higher standard? Is there a place for them to admit their funded studies could be biased and should be taken with a grain of salt?
