I still have the video Gucci put out, “Who is Sabato de Sarno?” on my watch later list. Now it would be pointless to watch. After entering the brand through the hole left by Alessandro Michele, Sarno had high expectations thrust upon him. Presumably, he didn’t meet those expectations, and that is why he is no longer creative director of Gucci. He came on in 2023 and is now out early 2025. So soon, far too soon.
Honestly, it makes me think of the quick turnover of coaches in the world of sports. We brought you in, with the exact same players we had last year, and you haven’t given us a championship. Off with you. Of course, the stakes are different in the fashion game. Whereas owners are focused on the coaches to bring in wins, fashion houses expect dollars. But even still, how long is a reasonable amount of time to give someone to finally win?
Is two years enough time to turnaround a struggling fashion house? Only focusing on the design aspect, can a creative director drum up the interest to because the new favorite luxury brand? Is it enough to just bring in a new designer?
