I was at an event. I could have networked, but I sat idly by as my coworker worked the room. I told myself I was just an observant person. Upon reflection that was a cop out. I was just nervous about the awkwardness of trying to meet/be rejected by new people. It was a fairly low stakes event, but I acted as an extra in my own life.
Sometimes, I could give myself some scene direction.
Okay your character is going to a networking event. What are her motivations? She just wants to have great conversations. She has had a bit of writer’s block, so she wants to learn as much as possible about other people to get some inspiration.
Your character is heading to the gym in the first time in years. Okay, her background story is she’s that doing so to reach a goal. She’s driven and very determined. And the costume designer would probably put her in some headphones and make sure she entered the scene with her notebook to demonstrate she’s focused on her specific training plan.
Really, I could do that for my real life, not just fictional scenes. What is my background story? How does that affect how I interact with the world? How does that impact what I want and how I go about getting it? If you were really the main character, what would you do differently? How would you direct your life?
