A few years ago, I was sucked into the David Goggins social media algorithm. If you are not familiar with the ex-navy Seal, he is known for his no excuses mentality. His wisdom is often spouted during distance runs or lifting sessions. He lives and breathes the lifestyle of moving past the limitations you place on yourself, often expressed through harsh physical tests. It’s rough and rugged, but there is a softness there.
The idea of not letting yourself of the hook with excuses is rooted first in the belief that you are capable of more than you think. That is where his “cookie jar” comes in. Your “cookie jar” is where you place all of your achievements. You keep a physical collection of perhaps strips of papers that remind you of your accomplishments. It could be a scribble about meeting a big deadline, a joyous recall about completing that marathon, or a line celebrating getting out of bed after a long bout of illness. It can be what you make it, but be sure to make it and return to it often to remember what you’ve done.
You are capable of a lot more than you think, because you have forgotten al that you have already achieved. You are already your best source of inspiration. I believe in you. I hope you do, too.
