In the midst of all of the emails from brands reminding me that “It’s Prime Day, so stock up,” one sent a different message. There is another way. Bookshop.org sent out a cheeky message, poising themselves as the antidote to Amazon dependency. With a mockup of a pill box, it sets itself as a solution while insinuating Amazon is a problem.
For those in on the joke, they will think of the culture that has been built around Amazon, the dependency being that many use it like a big box retailer. They buy everything there. There are people who certainly dependent on Amazon for many of their needs. And though it is convenient, that comes as a price. Bookshop.org, as they call attention to in other messages, notes that the price is worker health and safety and the financial stability of local booksellers. The crux of the brand is providing an alternative to Amazon and what they have determined as its ills.
It is a simple message. We think this a problem, and we will be the solution. Such a creative way to make that point, and such intentional timing. I love to hear the backstory on how this came to be. See below for a bit of the email Bookshop.org sent out.
