A physical story

It was supposed to be an ordinary day. I tuned in to So You Think You Can Dance along with a large portion of America. The dancing competition show captivated me so I had to see what each of the partners had planned as they worked hard to stay in the running. And there was a moment when it transcended dance.

Melissa and Ade entered the stage to perform to the song, This Woman’s Work, by Maxwell. They moved through the choreography, and then the routine was over. It just a dance, and yet it wasn’t; it was more. Somehow, just through their movements, I was brought into a story and moved to tears. Even now years later, after rewatching it again, I am tearing up.

There is a push for us to reconsider the stories we tell ourselves. What are the things we say inside our own minds that color our views on the world. It is true, the words we use are powerful, but words are not the only way we communicate. What is the story you tell through your body?

The way I choose to move through world communicates something. It tells a story of who I believe I am and who I want you to see. The way I move can reveal or conceal the narrative that guides my life. I have started to put emphasis on how I choose to take care of my body. The food I eat, the exercise I make time for, and the preventative care I seek is all important. It is all certainly part of the story. But the way I tilt my head, the posture I carry, the moments I let myself smile, even when I myself choose to dance, it all speaks volumes. Not just for the world, but for me.

There is a story that I am telling through my body. How much of it is true?

I highly recommend you watch the performance when you get a chance.
