You don’t have to keep that

You know, you don’t have to eat that.” I had been struggling to finish the failed recipe for fear of wasting food. “Here, just turn around, I will throw it out for you.” While I’m not advocating for you to start wasting food, there is something to that. It is okay to get rid of the things that aren’t working for you.

There is a concept called the sunk cost fallacy. It is where you’re so stuck on how much you invested in the thing in the past that you refuse to let go, even when doing so would benefit you.

A failed recipe is a rather mild example of this concept, but there are so many examples that we all need to evaluate in our own lives.

  • The money you invested in those expensive shoes that give you blisters
  • The self-esteem you’ve got tied up in that admirable workout plan that no longer works for your body or schedule
  • The years put into that long relationship that’s become unhealthy
  • And all the other examples of things we hold onto long after we know they aren’t working for us

What are you holding on to just because you think you should? Is it time for you to let go?
