I was listening to a podcast about email marketing. They made it seem so easy. You need more email addresses to send your stuff to. That’s your main problem. I took that information in and thought of all the ways I could get more people to give me their email addresses. Now I’m thinking that’s horrible advice, or at least the way I would have taken it. I don’t just need more people, I need more ideas.

I might want more people in the contacts list, and maybe I get them. Then what? What is the value I would offer them? Dry email content? Or worse, nothing at all, and they just forget I even existed?
For me, step one is figuring out what it is that I have to offer? What is it that I can provide that benefits them? How can I make showing up in their inbox a value add? Because at the end of the day, I don’t want a list of email addresses, I want a community of consumers who love what I do and are eager for more.
My step one isn’t going to be getting more email addresses. Step one will be to think more deeply what it is that I can offer that makes them giving me their email addresses worth it.
