Orange you glad

It’s the punch line of a groan-worthy knock knock joke. If you are so lucky to have never heard it, there are several cycles that go like this: Knock, knock. Who’s there? Banana. Banana who? Knock, knock. Who’s there? Banana. Banana who? Knock, knock. Who’s there? Banana. Banana who?

The punchline is that just when you thought they were going to annoy you with another round of bananas, you finally get an orange. “Orange you glad I didn’t say banana.”

This is a children’s joke, but let’s approach it with the reflection it deserves. I have a few questions for those who keep answering the door.

Why do you keep opening the door for more of the same?

Why are you waiting for opportunity to knock instead of leaving to go find it?

Where else in your life are settling like that? “Well at least it wasn’t a banana,” when you didn’t want a fruit at all?

Sometimes it’s enough to get something different. How relieving it is to finally get something new after you’ve lost hope that things won’t change. But is that all you’re willing to strive for? Just different? What about better?
