It was a chance sighting in the store. I overheard the customer speaking to the cashier. Her thesis: Life is too short to not do what makes you happy. Life is too unpredictable to save all your wishes for some day when. Sometimes, your joy is the best justification for spending your money.
She wasn’t being flippant or irresponsible. Instead, she was reflecting hard won wisdom from watching her mother perish with savings, never spent on the things she really wanted, waiting to be doled out to someone else who would.
It struck me, deeply. It made me reconsider my miserly ways of working so many hours just to stack money away and never let it go. It made me feel secure, but it didn’t make me happy.
Within reason, I’m shifting that mindset to take the time to enjoy experiences I have been putting off. I’m taking the trips I always wanted to take and enjoying the meals I longed for. I am rethinking how I see money, using it as a tool rather than just a cushion to help me sleep at night.
I wasn’t meant to hear that conversation, but I’m glad I did.
