They say that fashion repeats itself, and Gen Z is certainly bringing back 90s and early 2000s style. Low rise jeans, velour track suits have all made comeback. You could attribute this to a lack originality, people just repeat styles because they can’t think of anything new. But it is deeper than that. It’s more about nostalgia.
Returning to the past for style cues is more about hoping for a simpler time. In contrast to the pandemic and heavy technology overload of today, the 90s seem like a simpler time, full of hope and in-person friendships. Fashion becomes a way to mentally return, like a fabric time machine.
Maybe you don’t follow trends, but I imagine you have piece of clothing or accessory that transports you back in time. Maybe some time this week, pull out that item and let it transport you to feelings of another time.
