Perhaps you are like me and trying to figure out how to save money. Well, one way might be to stop buying so many things for future you. You know who I mean. That person you hope to one day be. The one wears a different size, the one who goes to fancy dinners, the one who is invited to all those events, the one you’ve never met before but keep dreaming about. That person. Stop shopping for that person and just focus on shopping for you.
Don’t just buy clothes that you hope to fit in to one day. More styles that you like even more may come out by that point.
Don’t buy a bunch of clothes to keep in your closet until you get that promotion. Your goals might change by then.
Don’t buy a bunch of stuff for when you finally buy a new house. Your taste in decorating may change by the time you sign the deed.
All I am trying to get at is that I know I have been guilty of these things. Then you have a home filled with things that you won’t or can’t use. Instead of aspiration shopping, how about aspirational living?
What habits do you think you would have when you get to your ideal body? What organizational practices would you use in your new home? And what skills would you have to take over your firm? Build those habits now. Live out those habits now.
Then when it comes time to shop, take your time and buy the items that fit who you are now and your current commitments. Allow yourself to celebrate your victories when they happen but live in the present now.
Design your approach to shopping to match how you are living now, but make sure that you are living your ideal life.
