I just learned that Tiffany &Co., that famed jewelry brand, designed the trophy that will be presented to the champion of the National Women’s Soccer League at the finale in November. The is made out of 24 karat gold vermeil and sterling silver and was designed to interpret the “aerodynamic forces of soccer.”

At first I thought, “Oh yeah, women, targeting,” But no, they just have been designing the trophies for major American sporting events. The Vince Lombardi Trophy presented to the winner of the Super Bowl Trophy? That’s their work, too. The prize given the US Open Champ? Also Tiffany’s. NBA. MLS. The only major American League without a Tiffany’s trophy is the NHL, but that is a whole story in itself.
I always thought the value of these trophies was in what they meant. I didn’t realize they were using precious metals for these things. I must say this gives me a whole new perspective when watching victory parades. One, there will be a lot more anxiety. But also, I will probably fall down into this rabbit hole of looking more into the relationship between this iconic American brand and the American sport industry.
