It’s happening again, Christmas is trying to slyly sneak up. I am writing this on September 20. It is not even officially fall in the United States. And yet there is already peppermint mocha creamer in the store with snowflake adorned bottles. The freezer is full of Santa themed ice cream flavors. And when I go to shop online, they are already selling holiday gift sets. Mind you, this is before they start their holiday return policy. I hope your loved ones want those gifts, because they’ll be stuck with them come December 25.

In 2014, Martha White writing for Time Magazine claimed this “Christmas Creep” was our fault. I can assure you, this is not my doing. Unlike the claims, I am not scooping up Christmas themed treasure as soon as it hits the stores. I am not providing that validation to the retailers who insist on stocking yuletide items in summer. Personally, I even refuse to listen to Christmas songs before I have eaten Thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps, I am a bit extreme on how late I personally want to start celebrating the holiday. But maybe we can all agree September is too early. Or maybe not.
But of course, my refusal to celebrate Christmas a full three months ahead of schedule doesn’t mean that businesses won’t keep pushing their holiday items out earlier and earlier. There has to be a breaking point, that even the most brazen retailer won’t cross. Surely, there must be. If not, I might have another rant next year, at a much earlier date.
