The major perk of the American Express card is the points. I mean, that is after all how they entice you. But what do you do with those points? I decide the best way to use mine was to book a hotel.
Having an American Express gold or platinum card allows you access to the American Express Travel site. There you can book hotels, rent cars, and buy plane tickets. And apparently, I never noticed this before, but you can also book cruises. Booking through the site helps you earn points faster and get special benefits at some properties. But you can also choose to use your points instead of paying by card. As I said at the top of this post, I booked my room using points for a recent trip. I found that the value for my points was very good. It was a great use of the welcome bonus and made up for the card fee. (I found that the value for using points to rent a car just didn’t make sense in comparison. Keep that in mind.)
A very important thing you should know before you book is that travel booked with points may be non-refundable. The American Express site says otherwise, but an email from the property told me that I could not cancel my reservation. Keep this in mind if your plans for travel need to be more flexible.
If you have an American Express, thinking about taking advantage of this benefit. If you don’t, maybe this is another reason to look into it.
