I was busy typing away a response to some content I consumed regarding fashion and different body types. That critique will come. Today I want to (very) quickly point out that fashion is all about illusion.

Consider exhibit A, the historically idealized female form, the hourglass. If you think about how women’s clothing has been designed throughout the ages, it has been very focused on tricking you into thinking the wearer had fuller bust, narrow waist, and curvy hips. The corset and bustles cheated to get to that. Now we have the much more comfortable belted waist.
We all have an ideal in our head of how we want our body and other people’s bodies to look in clothes. We have in our minds an image and go about creating that image through clothing. And this isn’t even just about size. You can trick the eye into thinking your limbs are longer or your shoulders are broader than they are, whether you are a size 2 or 22.
When you go about consuming fashion content, or people are telling you how to dress keep that in mind. What is the look that you are going for? What look do they think is ideal? Do your two ideals match up? You can take inspiration from all places, but just know that you’re probably going to need to adapt it to best suit you and your vision.
