The easier you make returns, the more likely I am to return as a customer

One luxury that I can’t live without: easy returns. Based on the content of this blog, you, like I, might have thought that I would say something like skincare or fragrance. But upon further reflection, I recognized that the reason why I feel comfortable trying all of those things is because I shop with retailers that make it so easy to do returns.  If it turns out I really shouldn’t have bought that thing, I can take it back without a problem. Take Sephora’s policy:

“If you are not completely satisfied with a Sephora purchase or gift for any reason, Sephora welcomes you to return new or gently used products for a full refund to your original method of payment if returned within 30 days of purchase, in most cases.”

Because of their policy, they are pretty much the only place where I buy beauty products. They have eliminated some of the risk for me of getting a product that doesn’t work for me.  While I haven’t really returned many products, I continue to go back to them as a retailer because of that comfort. And I’m not the only one. Apparently most people want hassle free returns, especially if they’re buying online.

I know that the cost of returns is going up for retailers, which is leading many of them to tamp down on them. However, the costs are going up for everyone, especially the consumers who may not have as much disposable income as they used and don’t want to keep taking financial risks. As I start to expand my list of retailers I use, I can almost guarantee you that I scroll down and check the return policy first. And the easier it looks, the more likely it is they will get my money in the first place.
