When I’m in stores, one thing that has always baffled me is when guests refuse help. They sit there, raking through many hangers instead of asking if their desired size or color is in stock. Or they wonder around, looking determined to find a particular thing but refuse to pointed in that direction. Given the nature of stores, they may believe the sales associate is going to be pushy and try to distance themselves. Or maybe they want to be able to do it all by themselves, because why would you not try to do it all by yourself?
When I think about a topic, I dive into it. This led me to look up why people do this, which then led to threads of people saying exactly the type of customer service they want to receive.
According to a MetaFilter thread from 2008, this is what people wanted
- Space to navigate the store on their own.
- For employees to engage with them without treating them as their next commission
- For employees to recognize them, using eye contact and offer help only when it is needed
- To be allowed to ask for help on their on terms and be able to find an employee when they need it
- To be greeted upon entering the store
- To be left alone
- Say hi and walk away
I wonder how this holds up. What do you expect when you go shopping?
