Rethinking house clothes

A festival was happening outside. I could hear the music. Everyone’s joy was even louder. I’d considered joining them. I even got dressed to go. I put on a dress I’d been eager to wear.  I did my hair. I was ready to go. And then I just sat on my bed with my laptop and did some work.

It is an odd thing to sit at home, doing ordinary things, while wearing fancy clothes. But it honestly didn’t feel as weird as I thought it would. All those times I those people were silly, those who sat at their home offices in suits, trying to create the semblance of a normal work environment. Meanwhile, I would sign on to my computer in a hoodie I’d had since high school and sweatpants that had seen better days. Don’t even get me started on my house shoes.

The experience of wearing something I would describe without exaggeration as fabulous lifted my mood, even if no one else was around to see my outfit of the day. It made me rethink my approach to my working from home wardrobe.

As I consider the person I want to strive to be (productive, pulled together, dignified), I should also be that person at home. I mean if it is your true self, there should be some consistency. Clothing is something that I use as I consider the image I want to portray to the outside world. Maybe it’s time to try at home chic and work on crafting that image, even when I am the only one who sees it.
