Increasing income is not the same as increasing wealth

Boy, am I tired. It has been a while since I have had day off. Even during the holiday period, I picked up a part-time job. I constantly picked up shifts, because as everyone knows more work equals more pay. I was doing whatever I could to increase my income.

My thought was, I would earn as much as possible to set aside to make the upgrades I need to make. You know housing, transportation, and a bit leftover for play. What actually started happening was that I was buying more food out because I didn’t have time to cook. I was making impulse purchases because I was tired and didn’t think through the long term effects of the purchase. And I was turning down social invitations and time with my family to just go off and work. After a while I had to consider whether it made sense. With all these hours I am working and the limited sleep I have been getting, am I anywhere closer to where I want to be? Earning more money means nothing if I spend it all. That is no way to build wealth of any kind.

I am turning my focus toward my spending habits and establishing clear financial goals. Just earning more money means nothing since there are way too many people across tax brackets that are living paycheck to paycheck. My goal is to track my spending more closely and evaluate why I chose to make that purchase. It is tedious and tough, but I know it will be worth it. And from there I can determine what my financial needs are and what my money goals will be moving forward. Rather than just working myself to the bone, I want to make sure I set up strategies that will help be build and maintain wealth in the future.
