Discipline as an act of self-love

In the hopes of getting a head start on the rest of the world who will wait until January, I decided I would start working on my health and fitness goals now. Except I don’t really feel like it. All I really want to do is lie about eating cookies, watching YouTube videos I won’t remember tomorrow, and staying up later than I had originally planned. So much for those goals.

I started to bemoan that I just can’t do it. I am not cut out for a life of discipline. But then as I was thinking about what today’s post would be, I came across this note I took from a video: Discipline as an act of self-love.

I didn’t come up with that. That came from the Struthless video I’ve embedded in this post. The video, which I should definitely re-watch, is about how to build self-discipline. He says to first re-frame the concept as an act of self-love. That stuck with me. And then I forgot all about it, and it is really convicting me anew. Excuse me while I type the words I need to hear on this.

Acting with discipline is not me just living a hard life void of fun. It is a way of demonstrating that I care about myself and my future. It is me taking concrete steps to give me the life I want, because that is what you do for the people you love: You sacrifice. Hopefully, you are also one of those people.

I’ll just end it there and get started on my goals.
